After an internal debate about when I should hit the trail, I completed 10 miles yesterday afternoon. Sometimes getting out the door is harder than the actual run – that’s exactly how it felt yesterday.
cheesing, freezing, & feeling proud
It was my first time ever running in the snow and sleet. Typically I’d pansy out and run on the treadmill but that sounded dreadful – little snow and sleet couldn’t stop me!
Ryan and I swung by TJ’s to pick up some groceries for the week and managed to walk out with only things that we needed – that never happens. My paycheck is happy…
Modern Family is an absolutely hilarious show! But does anyone else think that Haley [aka Sarah Hyland] looks like she’s about 16-years-old? I’m always shocked when I remember she’s 22.
I fell asleep around 10PM and woke up 3 hours later. I’ve been up since 1AM this morning watching House Hunters and snacking on apple slices + almond butter. Charlie has been giving me the stink eye all morning – the man needs his beauty rest.
favorite place to be: on the couch, second favorite place to: in the car
I don’t usually get hungry in the middle of the night but my tummy could not be tamed last night. I’m almost positive that it’s because of the long run. It makes me realize that I need to be more conscious of gauging what I eat on long run days – the last thing I want to do is run this body on an empty tank…
Believe it or not, the best bite of my Caramel Apple Spice Pancakes [simply this recipe plus a teaspoon of apple pie spice] this morning was smothered in TJ’s strawberry preserves – although Peanut Butter & Co.‘s Cinnamon Raisin Swirl came in as a close second.
I got a bit distracted playing with Charlie so the pancakes came out well-done, but there’s nothing that spoonfuls of PB&J can’t fix
I’m totally embarrassed to admit that we’ve had a pile of clothes sitting on our windowsill waiting to be ironed for months. Tonight I’ve got plans to bring out our mini ironing board and get it done today.
Ryan heard “Thrift Shop” for the first time yesterday and was inspired to take a trip to Unique [a local thrift shop] this morning. He always finds some of the silliest t-shirts there and enjoy skimming through their home department…
Sunday means Teet lunch date and this weekend a friend is joining us – the more the merrier!
Thankfully it’s a 3-day weekend so I have a chance to catch up on sleep. Although I can’t sleep the day away because I’ve got a challenge to conquer, inspired by a Twitter convo this morning with these girls – pancakes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Question: Are you good at gauging your hunger? I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full…
Question: If you had to eat the same meal for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, what would it be?

Well tell ryan he has great taste in music, you know how I love that song. I am glad you get a three day weekend with him but let’s hope you get some sleep as well. Charlie needs to be beautified so it is necessary to get some zz for that little sucker.
Haha Ryan’s working and Charlie’s sleeping – it’s just like a typical weekday day
I hope you find a way to catch up on sleep!! I never leave trader joe’s with a couple of extras thrown in there. I always pretend to be surprised and go “now how did that get in there!!”
p.s- I like that challenge. I’d be proud to take it on
We never do either, except this weekend!
Yay for 3 day weekends! My goodness,I totally agree with you about Sarah Hyland. I saw her on Ellen not too long ago and thought she looked about 12. An adorable girl though!
She seems super sweet! I think I saw that same episode
Congrats on getting out there for a 10 mile run! And especially for doing it in bad weather. I don’t even want to walk outside to my car right now because of the snow/wind, so it’s especially inspiring to hear about someone going out and running 10 miles in it!
Thanks
We definitely have had a mild winter so I can’t complain much… Although, I would like some snow!
Yay 3 day weekend! I think I’m pretty good at gauging my hunger, but sometimes I’ll find myself absolutely starving an hour after dinner, and when I go back and think about what I ate that day, I’ll realize that it wasn’t enough. So I guess even on days when my hunger-gauging fails me, my body still lets me know whats up in the end.
That’s awesome and that’s what I try to do too – I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full, but I think I need to be a bit more mindful on days I run longer and add an extra snack or two so I’m not ravenous later…
Pancakes, pancakes, and more pancakes! I can never eat enough of them
Pizza could be a close second though! I’m happy you made it out for your run yesterday! I’m working on learning how to gauge my fueling for runs, too….I’ve had some ick experiences in the past few months where I unintentionally didn’t eat enough before hand because I wasn’t hungry, felt fine during the run, but then spent the rest of the day curled up on the couch with a sick stomach because I didn’t eat enough….hasn’t happened in two months though so I’m hoping I figured it out haha
Ohhh nooo! Glad to hear that hasn’t happened again though! Thankfully, I tend to eat enough before and after but I think that I need to add another snack or two throughout the in-between hours…
Try Honey Stinger chews during long runs. They’re organic, honey-based and delicious! Happy training! (btw, Matt and I are running Boston in April and would love suggestions of where to eat, things to do, etc.!).
Thanks for the tip! But I’ve tried snacking during my longer runs but my stomach doesn’t do well – I think I need to add more bulk to my post-run meal and a few extra snacks in-between… And that’s absolutely awesome about you and Matt in Boston
Definitely feel free to get in contact with me before y’all go!
Nice run!! I’m pretty good at gauging my hunger . . . but I’m also one of those that likes to eat every couple of hours, so I never really get super hungry or super full.
Thanks! I try to eat every few hours too but I think this time it all just caught up to me
That TJ’s sign is too funny!
Modern Family is my fave show. I look forward to it every week & love how awkward Phil is when he talks to the camera!
If I had to choose one meal to eat 3x a day, it would be a sweet potato with cinnamon, sweetener, and a dash of salt… very comforting
Modern Family is one of the few shows that I could watch on repeat – it’s hilarious! Phil, ohhh Phil – he’s such a good man
And stuffed sweet potatoes are definitely delic, I wouldn’t mind eating one, two, or more of those a day…
Good for you for getting out in the cold and snow to run! I’m a baby when it comes to cold weather running! I do get much hungrier when I do a long run or more than an hour of working out in one day. Although, I tend to snack all day rather than eat larger meals. Not the best way to subside the hunger but it works for me!
I love grazing throughout the day but it’s hard when I’m at work so I try to eat 3 “main” meals and 2 snacks – something every few hours… Weekends are another story
I went to TJ’s yesterday too, and walked in and out with only the items that I needed (which NEVER happens!). I was definitely tempted a few times by some products not on my list, but my self-control was in pretty good shape yesterday and I said no. I was pretty proud of myself since TJ’s almost always gets me into trouble! :/
I can totally relate to that feeling! I love trying new products and TJ’s alwaysss seems to have something new!
I LOVE Modern Family! So funny! You’re right, Haley does look 16, but then I can’t really speak since strangers still ask what grade I’m in or where I go to high school. It’s good though, someday when I’m 40 I’ll still look 25 (at least that’s my hope, haha!). And hey, kudos to you on the run! Enjoy your three day weekend!
That is definitely a good thing for when you get older! I used to always look older than I was because I’m so tall, but nowadays I get questioned if I’m truly 23… Funny how things change
nice job on your run! I totally feel like getting out the door is harder than the actual run!
Thanks girl! With my runs getting longer each weekend, it’s definitely getting harder to get out the door…
Kudos on braving the cold and snow yesterday! I always run indoors in the winters because I’m a wimp haha.
I like to think I’m pretty good at judging my hunger, but I some days I wake up starving in the middle of the night too. That’s the worst because it always takes me ages to fall back asleep afterwards!
Trust me when I say that if it was snowing before I left the house I would have opted to run on the treadmill – I suppose it worked out in my favor
I’m always hungry through the night and into the next day after a long run. I always eat after, but it’s really after 12-24 hours after that my hunger hits and I become insatiable. Probably because that’s when most of the muscle repair is going on? Don’t quote me on that, just a guess!
Regardless — you, my dear, are ADORABLE and I’m SO excited you braved the outdoors. It always makes me feel like a champ when I manage to pull off a run in weather that would cause most others to hit the TM. Way to rock it.
And speaking of pancakes, I had some awesome whole wheat and almond (restaurant) pancakes after the race today. Ohmygoodness, they were awesome. Add in the over-easy eggs and turkey bacon and sliced banana. Heaven. Pancakes for the win. Always and forever.
Way to go superstar! I’m so proud of you for all that you have accomplished and just to think that you’ve still got so much more ahead of you… I’m the same way in regards to hunger – I’m not that hungry after a run but the next day I am ravenousss and want to eat everything in sight! Your post-race meal sounds absolutely divine
I love thrift shop! Hilarious!!!
It’s one of those songs that’s so bad it’s so good
Your caramel apple pie pancakes look to-die-for delicious! I’ve never bought or seen apple pie spice…Is it similar to pumpkin pie spice? And since we’re talking about pancakes, let’s talk about that epic pancake challenge. I sure hope you provide us photo documentation.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
Congrats on braving the frrreeeezing cold weather and cranking out that 10 mile run! I could barely stand being outside for two minutes today; that wind was biting, wasn’t it? On long run/workout days, my hunger is insatiable, too. As Chelsie said, it doesn’t usually set in until 10-12 hours later, though. And it when it hits, it ROARS. I’ve been known to get up in the middle of the night for a snack/meal because my stomach wouldn’t let me fall back to sleep (even after eating a substantial snack before bed).
I LOVE Thrift Shop, and listened to it several times this weekend. My tight budget makes it easy to empathize with him! Haha. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your weekend, Allison!
Whelp, I had to look up exactly what is in apple pie spice – it’s: cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. The combo of those 3 is out of this world – I definitely recommend buying some
And I think that I’m the same as you and Chelsie in terms of hunger – since the other night and all day yesterday my hunger could not be tamed!
The fact that you even iron your clothes is pretty awesome. I’m pretty sure (okay 95%) sure if I did such a thing they’d be sitting there for months. No wrinkles are too much that a dryer can’t fix in my book
I wouldn’t iron them if it wasn’t completely necessary! The problem is that I’m not always home to take them immediately out of the dryer so they sit in there for a while…
I really need to try the raisin cinnamon swirl PB – I love the original! Adding up the mileage makes such a difference to my appetite, my body needs lots of food if it is going to run any long distance!
Definitely! I’ll never forget the comparison of a car to a runners body – a car cannot run on an empty tank, so how could someone expect their body to run on empty?
If I wake up in the middle of the night starving I will stuff my face for a few minutes…..and that it usually enough to put me right back to sleep. Hopefully you’re able to get some more sleep in today!
I did, I did
Although it’s because I took Benadryl – but at this point, I’ll take any sleep I can get!
Ha! That song is my jam! My brother got married at the end of January and I’m not looking forward to reception pictures when I was shaking my ass on the dance floor when they played that song!
Haha it’s one of those songs that it’s so bad it’s good
I’d like to say that I’m pretty good at gauging my hunger… as long as stomach woes don’t get in the way and make me feel full and bloated. If they do then I tend to never feel hungry so I just kind of eat according to what I think I need. Exercise can really throw off my hunger cues as well – I remember back when I was doing more hardcore workouts, I’d often lose my appetite, not eat enough, and end up waking up in the middle of the night hungry. Then having to get up out of my nice warm bed was the worst part
And if I had to eat the same meal, it would definitely be yogurt messes. Give me yogurt, cereal, fruit, and nut butter, and I’m a happy camper forever
That’s another factor – with everything going on, I feel pretty bloaty pretty often and it’s uncomfortable… Hopefully that will all be fixed soon! And yogurt messes are always delic – I bet I could live off of those too
In the summer I LOOOOOVE 10 mile trail runs! There’s a little lake near my house that I loop around and it’s amazingggg gosh I miss the warmth
That sounds wonderful! I loveee running around the local lakes too
Overcooked or no, I’d totally take that pancake plate. YUM. I’m bad about judging hunger–I’ve had a few 2am snacks as a result–wake up hungry and know it’s my body saying, “nope, we’re not waiting for breakfast.” I am so hooked on that thrift shop song, TOO much fun!
Haha that’s exactly what my stomach was saying [er, yelling] at me
